Introduction
It has to be acknowledged that printed material is one of many good ways to promote independent learning and reading among farmers. Although development of media is very rapid with the help of technology and modernization, but the traditional printed material has always been the most acceptable way especially for adult learner. This will help such farmer to learn easily rather than taking smartphone or using other technology which might not be proper or handy for them. Durable printed material will be the best printed material for longer usage.
There are many choices of learning media that can be used but when it comes to provide adult learner, pictured book is highly suggested. Pictured book can be fully with picture or added by words as further explanation. In this study, a comic book was designed for farmer to learn how to manage their sheep farms. Through this media, they were expected to be able to gain specific knowledge regarding their farm business.
This was a testing study for printed material in order to figure out the best learning media for adult especially the farmer. There were four learning materials tested namely; colored comic with human character, colored comic with animal character, black and white comic with human character, and black and white comic with animal character.
Method
This was a quasi-experimental non equivalent control group and 2 x 2 factorial study. The sample were 60 farmers in Majalengka, West Java. There were four different groups which were given different treatement and pre-test, post-test before and after treatment and at the end they were given questionnaire to be filled up.
Results and Discussion
After several pre-test, treatments, post-test, and questionnaire, it was found that those-four-comic got different responses regarding farmers’ knowledge. Different background knowledge, domicilies, and age influence the way of learning in every farmer. Result of the study revealed that colored comic book is well acceptable for most farmer rather than the black and white one. Further, the human character comic book is better comprehended rather than the animal one. Since human character lies on daily routine, it creates better relation and context for the learners. Finally, the colored human character comic book is the most proper media for farmer since it helps them to comprehend better knowledge and understanding for farmers as the learners.
Conclusion
It can be concluded that colored human character comic book is the most suitable learning media for the farmer in Majalengka, West Java. The related story packed with beautiful and attractive learning media would be more effective and easier in helping the famers as adult learner in gaining knowledge of managing sheep business.
